世界地球日(World Earth Day，4月22日)
活动起源于美国。1970年4月22日，在美国民主党参议员盖洛德尼尔森(Gaylord Nelson)和哈佛大学学生丹尼斯海斯的倡议和组织下，美国数十万群众参与了声势浩大的“地球日”活动，呼吁创造一个清洁、简单、和平的生活环境。 作为现代环保运动的开端，“地球日”活动推动了多个国家环境法规的建立。
1990年4月22日，全球140多个国家、2亿多人同时在世界各地举行形式多样的环境保护宣传活动，呼吁改善全球整体环境。这项活动得到了联合国的肯定。
2009年4月22日，第63届联合国大会一致通过决议，决定将今后每年的4月22日定为“世界地球日”。
20世纪90年代，“地球日”的发起人创立了“地球日网络”组织，将全世界环保主义者联合起来推动“地球日”活动的开展。 地球是人类的'共同家园，但人类的活动却对地球造成了严重的破坏。生物赖以生存的森林、湖泊、湿地等正以惊人的速度消失;煤炭、石油、天然气等不可再生能源因过度开采而面临枯竭;能源燃烧排放的大量温室气体导致全球气候变暖，由此引发的极地冰盖融化、海平面上升等问题威胁到人类的生存发展。 保护地球资源环境、寻求可持续发展模式已刻不容缓。
在2009年“世界地球日”来临之际，“地球日网络(Earthday Network)”发起“绿色一代(GREEN GENERATION)”计划，倡导人类社会经济发展向可持续模式转变。该计划呼吁公众维护三条核心原则：消除人类对化石能源的依赖性，致力于可再生能源的开发利用，创造一个“无炭”的未来;承诺个人消费习惯与可持续发展要求相符合;建立“绿色经济”，通过为贫困人群创造“绿色岗位”使其脱贫，并将全球教育体系转变为环保型。
从20世纪90年代起，中国在每年的4月22日都举办“世界地球日”宣传活动，并根据当年的情况确定活动主题。
最初的地球日选择在春分节气，这一天在全世界的任何一个角落昼夜时长均相等，阳光可以同时照耀在南极点和北极点上，这代表了世界的平等，同时也象征着人类要抛开彼此间的争议和不同，和谐共存。传统上在很多国家都有庆祝春分节气的传统。早期联合国也在每年的春分举行世界地球日的活动。
